Nearly ten years after the Mamma Mia!’s movie release, it has been announced that iconic songstress Cher (Burlesque) will officially be appearing in the sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! While the original film gathered source material from ABBA’s musical catalogue and the theater show of the same name, the movie will offer newly scripted material, penned by Ol Parker (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).
Cher will share the screen with many of the same cast members who performed in the original film, such as Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Pierce Brosnan (Die Another Day), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Stellan Skarsgård (Thor: The Dark World), Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter), Julie Walters (Brave), and Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada). The extensive cast list will also be refreshed with several new names, such as Lily James (Baby Driver), Hugh Skinner (The Wipers Times), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), and Jessica Keenan Wynn (The Knick).
While the first plot followed Seyfried’s character’s desire to find her father just in time for her upcoming wedding, the sequel will involve a different thread. It will synthesize the former years with the current ones for the characters, which will allow the movie to explore the dynamics hinted at in the earlier film and flesh them out. While there doesn’t seem to be too much of an outcry for an origin story to Mamma Mia! the talented cast does sound promising. Audiences can judge for themselves if the sequel offers anything interesting when the movie comes out on July 20, 2018.
