The trailer has hit for Sisters, raucous new comedy starring Tina Fey (This Is Where I Leave You) and Amy Poehler (Inside Out) as…well, sisters, of course. Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) from an original script by Paula Pell (a former Emmy Award winning writer of Saturday Night Live), Sisters tells the story of the Ellis sisters (Fey and Poehler) who throw a final bash in their childhood home after learning their parents’ plans to put it up for sale.
Fey and Poehler, famously friends off-screen and frequent on-screen partners, seem to be letting their freak flags fly in Sisters. Both broke out on Saturday Night Live and have flourished as one of the more defining comedic duos in recent years– ever more so with three recent acclaimed runs as the co-emcees of the Golden Globe Awards. One the big screen, the duo previously headlined the 2008 comedy Baby Mama while Poehler memorably provided funny support to Mean Girls, the 2004 comedy that was written and co-starred Fey. Ever linked, both occupied the same comedy block on NBC for years with their separate acclaimed (and recently concluded) television shows– Fey’s 30 Rock and Poehler’s Parks and Recreation.
The chemistry between the two is clearly the big sell here. Yet, a diverse group of top-tiered comedic talent was brought aboard Sisters— including former and current SNL players Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Kate McKinnon and Bobby Moynihan. John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!), Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse), John Cena (Trainwreck), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), James Brolin (Burlesque) and two-time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest (Hannah and Her Sisters) co-star.
Fey, who recently earned raves for creating the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt, has another film on the horizon– Fun House, from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (I Love You Phillip Morris) in which she will play journalist recounting her darkly funny tales covering wartime in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Poehler, also currently earning raves for her voice work in Pixar’s current release Inside Out, is set to appear in the comedy The House opposite Will Ferrell as well as Netflix’s upcoming series Wet Hot American Summer, a sequel of sorts to the 2001 cult hit film. Both serve as producers of Sisters, as does Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) and Jeff Richmond.
The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2015, where distributor Universal Pictures hopes it will serve as nifty holiday counter-programing to Star Wars: Episode 7 — The Force Awakens. Check out the trailer below:
