Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Jeff Nichols’ (Mud) Midnight Special. The sci-fi drama stars Nichols’ longtime collaborator Michael Shannon (Elvis & Nixon) as a father on the run with his son (Jaeden Lieberher, Aloha), once he discovers his son has special and potentially destructive powers. Kirsten Dunst (TV’s Fargo), Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Joel Edgerton (Jane Got A Gun), and Sam Shepard (August: Osage County) also star in the film.
Based on the trailer, the film is clearly the biggest film from Nichols in terms of scale which makes sense considering it’s his first studio movie. The director treaded in the supernatural with Take Shelter which followed a man, also played by Shannon, overcome with paranoia that the end of days is approaching. Nichols is currently filming the historical drama Loving which follows an interracial married couple for marrying in 1958 Virginia.
The trailer comes after Warner Bros. pushed the film from a November 25 release to March 18, 2016. That move was likely due to big films like Creed, The Good Dinosaur, and The Danish Girl opening that weekend.
We’ll have more on the film leading up to its release. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below.
