Writer-director Trey Edward Shults made an indelible first impression on the American independent scene with his debut feature Krisha. The riveting Cassavettes-esque family drama earned the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival and earned Shults prizes from the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle for his directorial debut. Shults is back with his follow-up project and it comes complete with bigger stars and the nifty marketers of A24 Films.
It Comes at Night is a new thriller – penned and directed by Shults – that features the impressive ensemble cast of Joel Edgerton (Loving), Riley Keough (American Honey), Christopher Abbott (James White), Carmen Ejogo (Selma) and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Birth of a Nation). A24 Films debuted the first trailer on Monday, shortly after the film made its surprise world premiere at the 2016 Overlook Film Festival, where It Comes the Night generated positive early reviews.
The synopsis reads as: “Award-winning filmmaker Trey Edward Shults follows his incredible debut feature Krisha with It Comes At Night, a horror film following a man (Joel Edgerton) as he is learns that the evil stalking his family home may be only a prelude to horrors that come from within. Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.”
It Comes the Night opens in theaters on June 9th.
