Earlier this week, Universal revealed the first teaser trailer and first official poster for their new adaptation of monster movie classic The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the retelling of the classic Egyptian tale will star Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, as well as Sofia Boutella as the ‘mummy’ princess.
Similar to the 1999 adaption, the story will follow a group of army special forces and scientists as they try to stop an ancient princess from unleashing unspeakable terror on the modern world. Unlike the 1999 version though, which took place in the 1920s, this will take place in modern day.
Although this will be Alex Kurtzman’s second directorial role, Kurtzman has an impressive resume behind him. He served as writer/producer for Star Trek (2009) & Star Trek: Into Darkness, and produced Now You See Me and Now you See Me 2. Kurtzman will be producing future Universal monsters movies The Wolf Man and The Invisible Man.
Writers Christopher McQuarrie (known for The Usual Suspects) and Jon Spaihts (known for Doctor Strange and upcoming Passengers) co-wrote the screenplay.
The Mummy is set to be released June 9, 2017.
