Working Title has released the first trailer for the transgender drama The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina). The film is based on the book by David Ebershoff that tells the true story of artist Einar Wegener (Redmayne), the first person to undergo a sex change operation. Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Amber Heard (Pineapple Express) and Matthias Schoenaerts (Far From the Madding Crowd) also star.
The trailer reveals more about how Wegener discovered that he was really Lili Elbe after marrying Gerda Wegener (Vikander) and highlights how the couple came together for the operation despite the impact Lili’s transition would have on their marriage.
The movie is an early awards favorite, especially for Redmayne who is hot off winning the Best Actor Oscar for playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) is also a an awards draw- notably The King’s Speech won four Oscars including Best Picture and his last film, Les Misérables won three Academy Awards including one for actress Anne Hathaway. The Danish Girl, distributed by Focus Features, will make its world premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival and will play at the Toronto Film Festival, as well, to help earn buzz before debuting in theaters.
Trans-storytelling appears to have hit a new wave of sorts this year following the very public coming out of Caitlyn Jenner and the award winning Amazon series Transparent. The Danish Girl is one of a growing number of transgender stories releasing this year. The other one of note is About Ray which highlights the transition of a teenage girl transitioning to a man. Tangerine, which follows a pair of transgender prostitutes in LA on Christmas Eve drew notice this summer.
The Danish Girl is set to release November 27. You can watch the trailer below.
