The girls are back in town. Director Elizabeth Banks has pinned down her stars for the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot, and the cast is pretty impressive. Banks herself will play Bosley, the Angels’ handler, while the super-spies will be portrayed by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. The latest draft of the script is penned by Jay Basu and Banks, and they worked from earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Semi Chellas.
Charlie’s Angels rose to popularity in the 1970’s with a culturally significant TV show featuring three gorgeous female spies who work for a mysterious voice (Charlie) from a speakerphone. The next generation of Angels burst back onto the scene in 2000 in a movie starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Bill Murray, and Lucy Liu. The combination of beautiful women and stylish spy-action proved intoxicating for moviegoers, and a sequel called Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle landed in 2003.
The upcoming reboot finds another new generation of spies working for the enigmatic Charlie. The agency they work for has grown considerably and gone global, providing security and intelligence services to clients on a worldwide scale. This film focuses on one of the many teams who now work for the sprawling company.
You likely know Stewart from The Twilight Saga. Scott will star as Princess Jasmine in the upcoming live-action Aladdin, and she previously worked with Banks on the latest Power Rangers film. Balinska is a British actress best known for Midsomer Murders, a British television detective drama.
Variety notes that the release date for Charlie’s Angels has been bumped back a few months, and now rests on September 27, 2019.
