The entertainment industry has been revolutionized as result of Netflix, the streaming giant that was a pioneer in at home entertainment. The company has frequently been under scrutiny for their role in the industry, with many acclaimed filmmakers including from Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, and Edward Norton, advocating that the company has “destroyed” movies and the movie watching experience. Well, acclaimed writer and director Charlie Kaufman has a different opinion.
Kaufman, who’s next film I’m Thinking of Ending Things will debut on Netflix this September, has always been known for being an original and creative writer. His most famous works, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, are still classics today for their unique plots and engaging thematic material. Kaufman states that Netflix didn’t ruin anything and they are one of the few companies that still embrace original movies, instead focusing the blame on studios as a whole, “[Early on] I could play around and experiment, but the business has changed enormously, and it all happened around 2008 when studios stopped making movies and started making tentpoles.”
It is no secret that many studios have pivoted away from original movie making to movies based off of properties and to deny that is to ignore the studios who are in charge of industry trends.
Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things is based on Ian Reid’s psychological thriller novel of the same name and follows woman who drives with her boyfriend to his family’s isolated farmhouse. It will debut on Netflix September 4th.
