Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, and Jason Clarke to Topline ‘Mudbound’

Awards-bait actress Carey Mulligan (Suffragette) is set to lead trio of fellow male actors for the upcoming WWII indie Mudbound, according to Variety. Her co-stars look to be just as attention grabbing as she will be accompanied by Garrett Hedlund (Unbroken), rising star Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), and Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys).

To be directed by Bessie (HBO) helmer Dee Rees, the film will be based off the titular novel by Hillary Jordan and adapted for the screen by Virgil Williams (TV’s Criminal Minds). Producers at Good Universe will be shopping the indie around in the coming weeks for distribution rights. MACRO and Zeal are also co-financing.

Mudbound will tell the story of a city laborer who relocates his family from a war-torn WWII country to a farm in Mississippi. The family faces great hardships and financial trouble as well as the complicated return of the farmer’s brother from war. Clarke and Mulligan will play husband and wife, while Hedlund will portray Mulligan’s brother-in-law, and Mitchell a war hero and the son of the sharecroppers who live at the family’s farm. The ravages of war as well as embedded Southern race relations will take center stage.

Mulligan is coming off of a relatively successful 2015 after carrying both Far From the Madding Crowd and Suffragette. She grabbed headlines last year for speaking out against the gender disparity in Hollywood and the quality of roles for women, and in turn continues to nab prestige projects. While she has taken somewhat of a break in 2016 since giving birth to her first child, Mudbound will mark her triumphant return to the screen.

Hedlund was last seen in the indie drama Mojave, and as a young Captain Hook in Pan. He’ll next be seen in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Mitchell has recently wrapped filming on Kong: Skull Island, and Clarke will be co-starring alongside Natalie Portman in the long awaited Jane’s Got Gun.

We will have more on Mudbound as new information surfaces.
