There has been much recent news for the latest film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic 1874 novel Far From the Madding Crowd. Not only has filming begun in the UK, but several prominent cast members have been announced. Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby) will play the role of Bathsheba Everdene, who, in Hardy’s novel, must navigate the affections of three different men. Her suitors include a shepherd (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone), a successful farmer (Michael Sheen, Midnight in Paris), and a Sergeant (Tom Sturridge, On the Road).
Hardy originally published the story in monthly installments as a serial novel, but revised the text for later editions. Far From the Madding Crowd will be directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) and will be adapted from Hardy’s novel by Vinterberg and David Nicholls (Great Expectations). The film also stars Juno Temple (Magic Mike) as Fanny Robin.
Audiences and fans of the novel can expect Far From the Madding Crowd to release in 2014.
