‘Captain Marvel 2’ Finds its Director in Nia DaCosta

Though most Marvel films may be on hold for now, Captain Marvel 2 is getting ready for production with director now on board. Director of the upcoming Candyman remake, Nia DaCosta has been tapped to direct the Marvel heroine sequel, which is scheduled for 2022.

DaCosta got her start with indie film Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. Her second feature, Candyman, produced and written by Jordan Peele, is scheduled for release this October. DaCosta beat out many other directors competing for the project according to Deadline, and will be taking over the Captain Marvel helm from previous directors of the first installment, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

This film is expected to be one of the highest budgeted films from a black female director after Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, as well as the first Marvel film to be directed by a black woman. In terms of women directors at Marvel, she follows Chloe Zhao, who directed the upcoming Eternals film, and of course Anna Boden.

The first Captain Marvel film crossed the $1 billion mark globally, and after leading lady Brie Larson appeared as Carol Danvers again in Avengers: Endgame, the highest grossing movie of all time, the sequel is expected to be even more successful. This film is a key part of Marvel’s Phase 4, which also includes Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Spider-Man 3, Black Panther 4, Ant-Man 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

The lineup is loaded, but not locked, as dates may continue to shift due to COVID-19 delays. For now Captain Marvel 2 is scheduled for release on July 8, 2022.
