Marvel‘s next big entry into their ever-expanding cinematic universe, Captain America: Civil War, is set for release this summer, and by the glimpses we’ve been given from the trailers, it looks like it may be the darkest of their films to date. With Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) facing off against former teammate Captain America (Chris Evans), as well as some mighty supporting players, the tone of this film has to be at least somewhat grim considering the subject matter. After having an acclaimed last entry, the quite dark Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Russo Brothers announced that this intense superhero face-off will be even more so. Attending the Wizard World Cleveland Comic-Con, they had a few words to say about their upcoming Marvel film:
We really did a radical reinterpretation of Captain America in Winter Soldier. We were twice as aggressive in tone and execution on Civil War.
Civil War circles around Steve Rogers, attempting to protect his friend and former enemy Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier. Tony Stark is tasked with helping bring down these figureheads who are seen more as wild vigilantes than heroes. For the first time audiences will see the African-born fighter, Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), as well as new Spider-Man (Tom Holland), but the list of iconic characters to be seen goes on.
This film will be a major step away from some the most recent Marvel films like the wacky Guardians of the Galaxy and the charming Ant-Man, which could possibly set new standard tone for what’s to come after its release. The Russo Brothers are also tackling the two-part Avengers: Infinity War a few years down the road, likely making Civil War a revealing lead up to those films.
Captain America: Civil War will be released in theaters on May 6, 2016.
