2026 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or recipient Fjord will release in theaters this October. Variety reports that the Neon acquisition has an October 9th release date. This mirrors the release date for three of the studio’s prior Palme d’Or winners which include Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora. Each aforementioned Palme d’Or winner has gone on to receive Oscar nominations, with Parasite and Anora going on to receive the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020 and 2024, respectively.
Fjord stars Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice, Marvel’s Avengers franchise) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value, Backrooms) and is directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. The film, which Variety calls a “brilliantly knotted social drama”, is Mungiu’s second to win the prestigious honor at Cannes. His prior Palme d’Or recipient is 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007).
Variety describes Fjord‘s synopsis as following “the Gheorghiu family — Romanian father (Stan), Norwegian mother (Reinsve) — as they settle into new life in a remote Norwegian village, the mother’s birthplace. They quickly bond with the Halbergs, who live in the neighboring house near the bay, and, despite their very different upbringings, the children of both families soon become close friends. When the Gheorghius are suspected of disturbing behavior, their lives are thrown into chaos as they become the center of small-town scrutiny.”
The Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or, (translated in English to “Golden Palm”) is the highest level award presented to the director of Best Feature Film. It is considered to be one of the greatest honors bestowed in the film industry.
