The lineup for the Cannes International Film Festival has been announced. During a press conference in Paris held Thursday morning, Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch announced this year’s full lineup. The lineup includes new films from auteur filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt, Richard Linklater, Ari Aster, and Wes Anderson.
Here are some of the films included in this year’s lineup. Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind is an arthouse drama set during the Vietnam War starring Josh O’Connor and John Magaro. Ari Aster makes his Cannes debut with Eddington, a contemporary Western black comedy starring Joquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone. Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a historical drama depicting the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, will also be part of the Cannes lineup. Wes Anderson, no stranger to Cannes, will again be premiering a new film at the festival, The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Many previous Cannes winners will premiere their new films at Cannes. Julia Ducournau, director of the 2021 Palme d’Or winner Titane, will premiere her latest film, Alpha. It is described as a genre-bending, 1980s-set movie about an 11-year-old girl who is rejected by her classmates after it is rumored she has been infected with a new disease. Two-time Palme D’or winners, the Dardenne Brothers, will return to Cannes with their Belgian social drama, The Young Mother’s Home. Joachim Trier, whose previous film, The Worst Person in the World, received critical acclaim at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, will premiere his new movie, Sedimental Value, at this year’s festival, which once again stars Renate Reinsve, who won the Best Actress award for The Worst Person in the World, at the 2021 festival.
Many high-profile films will also receive out-of-competition premieres at Cannes this year. Spike Lee’s newest film, Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, will premiere out of competition. Also premiering out of competition is Bono: Stories of Surrender, a documentary about the U2 frontman directed by Blonde and Killing Them Softly director Andrew Dominik. The most exciting out-of-competition premiere is Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which is premiering at Cannes ahead of its May 23rd release.
