‘Call Me By Your Name’ Director, Luca Guadagnino to Direct ‘Scarface’ Remake

In the ever growing sea of film remakes, the iconic 1980s crime film Scarface is next in line for Universal Studios. As a remake of a remake, this sounds like a tough job, but fortunately Universal is bringing some promising talent to in Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino, who is set to direct the upcoming remake of Scarface.

Not only will Guadagnino will be serving as director, but he’ll be working alongside the Coen Brothers, who are penning Scarface‘s script. The film will also be produced by Dylan Clark a part of his own production company, while Scott Stuber, Marco Marabito and Brian Williams are set to be executive producers. No word on which actors will be set to take on the role of Tony Montana however.

While a remake of Scarface sounds like a desperation from Hollywood, the original 80s film is actually a remake in its own right, based off the 1932 crime drama loosely based on a novel by Armitage Trail. However, Al Pacino’s version of Tony Montana has become the more recognized version, as well as his film having more memorable lines and moments. Considering that the 80s film sought to differentiate itself from the 30s version, it can be assumed that this new version of Scarface won’t be just an exact copy. Plus, given how Luca Guadagnino and the Coen Brothers have created some amazing remakes like Suspiria and True Grit, this upcoming Scarface remake has more potential than one would initially expect.

No release date has been set for Scarface.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
