After a long month of management issues for Busan International Film Festival, the festival board appointed Nam Dong-chul to get things back on track for the festival as the interim director. The issues consisted of two high-profile resignations and alleged sexual harassment accusations against the festival director Huh Moon-young, who denies the accusation but chooses to not return due to personal reasons.
A local newspaper got released, that a festival employee (identity not known) reported Huh to the Center for Gender Equality in Korean Films called DeunDeun. The employee allegedly accused Huh of using sexually inappropriate language. And, in early May, the festival promoted Cho Jong-kook, a close friend of chairman Lee Yong-kwan, as the managing director in order to move things along by splitting the festival director’s job, which consisted of the responsibility for operations, administration, and budgeting. Later on, Huh announced his plan for resigning. Additionally, two films threatened to boycott this year’s event in October due to the support for Huh, and Lee said that he would resign to take responsibility for the mess caused by Cho.
In a report as Variety, it was noted that the board has asked Cho to step aside: “This year’s festival will be led by program director Nam Dong-chul on behalf of the vacant festival director.” The spokesperson continued, “For this year’s successful festival, chairman Lee will maintain his position until the end of the festival. He will take on the full responsibility of the current situation and resign after the completion of the festival.”
Nam will be the appointed director as he is an experienced programmer and has previously worked with Busan’s festival and market structures and will be in charge of the festival in October.
