Earlier this year, back in February, Joss Whedon announced that he would be departing from the Batgirl movie project. Two months later, Warner Bros. is continuing with development on the film project but starting over with new script. Christina Hodson, the scribe behind the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, has been reported to take over writing duties for script on the DC heroine. She’s an ideal choice, having also created a treatment for a potential upcoming DC film, which will have Harley Quinn and Batgirl: Birds of Prey. The Hollywood Reporter was first to break the news.
The new story is said to focus on the version of the character as Barbara Gordon, whose relation to her dad well-known police commissioner James Gordon complicates her role as a superhero. Being on the iconic Adam West show (first as Betty Kane) makes her the most established version of Batgirl and a perfect candidate for this DC Entertainment reboot.
Fans were excited to hear of Whedon’s addition to the project last year as he’s already had success with Marvel’s Avengers and is also the mind behind late 90’s, early 2000’s pop culture staple Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seemed as though Whedon had all the right experience to take on the task of one of DC’s most prominent female protagonists. On the other hand, however, some might’ve wanted an alternative to a white male taking on the story for a woman. Now, with Hodson penning the new screenplay, Warner Bros. is looking at a promising fresh start. We can look forward to exciting updates as far as directing duties and who will don the black cape in the near future.
