Broad Screen Pictures has acquired the distribution rights to Last Days in the Desert, the new film starring Ewan McGregor (Beauty and the Beast), Tye Sheridan (Joe), Ciaran Hinds (The Debt), and Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel). McGregor plays Jesus Christ in an imagined chapter of his fasting and praying for forty days in the desert as he struggles with temptation from The Devil (also played by McGregor) when they fight over the fate of a family (Sheridan, Hinds and Zurer).
Broad Green Pictures has been quickly building themselves up to be a major player in distributing indie films. The studio’s upcoming releases include the drama 99 Homes as well as two upcoming films from director Terrence Malick including Knight of Cups and a yet to be titled film. The deal could be seen as play for the studio to capture the attention of Christian audiences who recently helped make War Room – the number one picture at the weekend box office. However, the fact that this is an entirely fictional event in Jesus’ life could keep them away as Noah did last year.
Last Days in the Desert has been completed for some time and premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. It was directed by Rodrigo Garcia (Passengers) and shot by Academy Award-winning Cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki (Birdman).
While the film premiered at Sundance, no release date has been announced at this time.
