Christopher Nolan is getting ready to lift the curtain on his next film, The Odyssey. A new trailer for the film has just been released ahead of its July debut. Written by Homer between the 8th and 7th century BC, The Odyssey has become one of the most well regarded and widely known stories ever told. It follows King Odysseus in the wake of the Trojan War as he makes his way back home to Ithaca, while he fights for the survival of him and his soldiers from countless threats.
Matt Damon takes up top billing in the film as King Odysseus himself, teaming up with Nolan once again after Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Anne Hathaway plays the wife of Odysseus, Penelope, while Tom Holland plays their son, Telemachus. The robust supporting cast is rounded out by Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and many others.
When it comes to scale, stories don’t come much bigger than The Odyssey. Several adaptations have been produced over the years, employing different techniques when it comes to storytelling and style to bring it to life. Many of Nolan’s past films have helped convince moviegoers that he’s more than up to the task of adapting The Odyssey, between many of his past films such as Interstellar or The Dark Knight.
Although the trailer ran for less than 2 minutes, several iconic moments from the story were already shown off. One in particular is the discovery of the Trojan horse, which was brought into the city of Troy and believed to be an offering of some kind. The trailer sticks closely to the events of the book, as in the middle of the night, Greek soldiers, led by Odysseus, emerged from the horse to let the army in through the gates to sack the city. Those who saw Avatar: Fire And Ash in IMAX over the weekend would have seen this sequence played out before the film began as a special extended preview for the film.
The Odyssey hits theaters July 17th. Check out the trailer below.
