Box Office: ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Scores $92.5M In Second Weekend

The video game adaptation continues to fall short of expectations as it soars toward $1 billion at the global box office, leaving room for a slew of new films to take over the number one spot, including The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe. Universal and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the first blockbuster film of the year, soon to exceed $1 billion at the global box office.

According to an article written by The Hollywood Reporter, final figures released on Monday, the Nintendo video game adaptation earned a whopping $92.5 million at the North American box office in 4,371 theaters in its second weekend of play, well above expectations. The film topped Sunday’s very high estimate of $87 million, making it the biggest two weeks ever for an animated film after surpassing Frozen 2 ($86 million).

As of Sunday, Super Mario had grossed $353.3 million domestically and $339.8 million internationally, reaching $693.1 million by Sunday before hitting $700 million on Monday. Its international sales included an impressive second weekend of $102.5 million from 71 markets, after a decline of less than 28%. Mexico is already leading the 3rd best showing of an animated film in Hollywood history, and has earned a whopping $52 million.

The animated sensation broke many records when it launched during the long Easter holiday. Mario passed Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so far, the highest-grossing film of the year at the domestic, international and worldwide box office. It also overtook Warcraft ($439.4 million) and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8 million) to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

A number of new films, including Universal’s modern-day vampire comedy, Renfield, and Screen Gems’ supernatural thriller, The Pope’s Exorcist, hit theaters nationwide this weekend with mixed results.
