Box Office: ‘Glicked’ Opening Weekend, ‘Wicked’ Flies To $114M Domestically With ‘Gladiator II’ Trailing Behind

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in 'Wicked'

It’s the biggest pre-Thanksgiving domestic weekend at the box office in eleven years since The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was released in 2013, leading all titles that weekend to an accrued $209 million. Combined, two of the most highly anticipated titles of this year, Universal’s Broadway adaptation Wicked and Paramount’s epic sequel Gladiator II, have earned $205M in their opening weekend.

Wicked has exceeded 2012’s Les Miserables $103M opening, flying to $114M just this weekend. Alone, Gladiator II opened to about $55M and beat 2002’s 8 Mile in becoming the best-performing R-rated November release.

Disney’s Moana 2 is also expected to make waves at the box office this coming week, causing wonder as to whether or not Wicked will be able to hold firm at number one.

The Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans-led Red One falls to third place under the “Glicked” monument, making $13M this weekend alone. New entry Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. comes in at fourth, while box office heavy-earners The Wild Robot and Smile 2 cling to the Top 10 list as well at numbers eight and nine, respectively.
