Boston Society of Film Critics Name ‘La La Land’ Best Picture of the Year

Damien Chazelle’s modern musical La La Land appears to have charmed the Boston Society of Film Critics. The film, Chazelle’s second following his 2014 breakthrough Whiplash, won top honors from the critics group as well as the Best Director prize for Chazelle himself. Additionally, Tom Cross (an Oscar winner for Whiplash) was bestowed citation for editing the candy-colored Technicolor valentine. The big win from Beantown critics continues an impressive showing for the Oscar hopeful and follows its Best Picture win from the New York Film Critics Circle.

Boston film critics went along with early consensus starting to form among the acting categories as Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Isabelle Huppert (Elle and Things to Come), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and lovable longshot Lily Gladstone (Certain Women) were all singled out for their admired performances.
