Sports rivalry films have made their resurgence recently in the film industry, with many new, successful sports films, like 2015’s Creed and 2013’s Rush, taking the sub-genre to new heights. Borg Vs. McEnroe looks to be the newest film to tackle the sports rivalry story, with tennis being at the center of the film. The trailer gives us an idea as to what to expect from the Swedish drama film.
Borg Vs. McEnroe will focus on the rivalry between two extremely famous tennis players: Björn Borg and John McEnroe. The story will hone in on their individual rises to fame, ending with their extremely famous 1980’s match at Wimbledon. Sverrir Gudnason (Gentlemen, Blowfly Park) will be playing Borg, while Shia Labeouf (Transformers Franchise, Fury) will be the notorious bad boy of tennis, McEnroe. Other actors on the film include Stellan Skarsgård (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), David Bamber (The King’s Speech), and Robert Emms (Kick-Ass 2).
The film is being directed by Janus Metz Pederson, known for his award-winning documentary Armadillo. This film appears to be Pederson’s first non-documentary feature, and will feature a screenplay from Ronnie Sandahl, known for his directing and writing on Swedish film Underdog. The film will be released in Sweden on September 6, with no current international release date announced.
