Sony Pictures has acquired film rights to Daniel Suarez’s sci-fi thriller novel Influx, with Bloodshot director David S.F. Wilson to helm the movie adaptation. Influx, which won the Prometheus Award, will be adapted by Zak Olkewicz. Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Steve Tisch, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw have been set to produce.
The book is set in a futuristic setting in the most big scale sci-fi tale way. Influx’s protagonist is a particle physicist perfecting a world-changing invention, only for his lab to get infiltrated by terrorists. He’s held captive by a clandestine U.S. government department, where he refuses an offer to work with them. The rebellious act is soon met with prison and torture at the hands of an artificial intelligence inquisitor. He realizes that he must escape the corruption and thwart what the government is doing.
The project was sold based on a pitch. A cast for Influx has yet to be determined. With the current coronavirus pandemic at hand, production and release dates remain up in the air for the team being.
Wilson is currently coming off the Vin Diesel-starring sci-fi action film Bloodshot, which Sony released just as theaters were beginning to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was adjusted to a VOD release promptly after. Olkewicz just adapted the Japanese graphic novel Maria Beatle, under the title Bullet Train, for Fuqua Films.
