Birds of Prey’s Jurnee Smollett Would Absolutely Return For A Sequel

Jurnee Smollett, who stared as Black Canary in DC’s Birds of Prey, says she would absolutely return as Black Canary in sequel. She discussed the role with Entertainment Weekly during their Women Who Kick Ass panel for their Fandom Week, part of an online programming lineup to help fill the void of a cancelled San Diego Comic-Con.

Birds of Prey saw the return of Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn while serving as the DCEU introduction of a number of other female superheroes for several other female heroes, including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) and aforementioned Black Canary. Released in February, the film was received positively by fans and critics alike, but was a box office disappointment, opening to a mere $33 million and grossing an underwhelming $201.8 million worldwide. While it is far from a bomb, in comparison to other superhero movies it was not a success.

As a result of this, there has been no world of a sequel being in development at Warner Brothers. While the film did close out it’s central story, it still leaves room for a sequel. It is worth noting that the film, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, was the only studio tentpole superhero film released this year. The film seems to have a feverish fanbase and VOD and DVD sales might help build it’s audience enough for Warner Brothers to gamble on a sequel. With no new blockbuster movies being released this summer, it would be no surprise if Birds of Prey continues to gain traction, the question is whether it is enough for a sequel.
