With so much of the movie world being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, many have wondered about what will potentially happen to films that are currently in theaters. This includes DC’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which saw disappointing box office numbers on opening weekend, something that unfortunately hasn’t gotten much better now with theaters closed for the time being. However DC fans should feel fortunate, as Warner Bros announced that the film will be receiving an early digital release later this month.

This new digital release has not come across as too surprising, given how other movie studios are opting to put current theatrical release on demand due to the need to quarantine. The film’s director Cathy Yan has been very adamant about her film being on digital platforms shortly after Universal made the announcement of releasing Trolls World Tour, The Invisible Man and a few other movies on digital. Therefore, it certainly isn’t a surprise for Warner Bros to be doing this for one of their big tent pole films.
Birds of Prey might have been a disappointment from a financial standpoint, but thankfully the film has been received very positively among fans and critics. While the film was far from a massive hit like Joker, this VOD announcement will be beneficial for both Warner Bros and fans of the film who felt it deserved better than what it got. Given these rather rough times, it’s nice to know we can still watch some fun antics from Harley Quinn.
Birds of Prey will be release on Video On Demand March 24th 2020.
