Bill Murray Confirms His Return to the Ghostbusters Franchise in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

With the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife being highly anticipated by longtime fans, many are curious as to whether the series will see one of its most iconic stars return. While it was hinted at in the trailer and, despite confirmations by many actors that he will return, fans weren’t certain if Bill Murray would reprise his role as Peter Venkman. That was until a recent Vanity Fair interview with Murray, where he confirmed that he will reprising his role in the upcoming soft reboot.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Murray discussed his experience on set and working with the iconic Ghostbusters equipment again for the first time in years. One subject brought up was the return of other Ghostbusters veteran actors since Harold Ramis’ tragic passing in 2014, which delayed the possibility of a third entry. At least if you don’t include the 2009 video game.

Murray mentioned how the filmmakers were aware of this and approached the soft reboot by stating, “Well, we are a man down. That’s the deal, and that’s the story that we’re telling, that’s the story they’ve written”. While most of the legacy cast will return, it will still focus on new characters including Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace as grandchildren of the original Ghostbusters.

Although he may not appear for the entire runtime, fans are very reassured at Bill Murray’s return to Ghostbusters. Minus his voice role in the 2009 game and a small cameo in the 2016 remake, it seems more promising that Murray will, at the very least, play a decent-sized role in Afterlife. It will definitely be nice to see him don the proton pack once more this summer.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set for release July 10th 2020.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
