One of the most popular trends to come out of Broadway are musical adaptations of popular non-musical films, with the adaptation of Mean Girls being amongst the more recognizable successes. Now Paramount and Tina Fey, who starred in and wrote the screenplay for Mean Girls, announced that a film adaptation based on the musical based on her film is underway.
Fey, who will serve as a producer this time around, expanded on her interest in this adaptation by reflecting on the original film’s success, stating that “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences.” She even described her experienced with Mean Girls for over 16 years as “They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.” Other Paramount employees have expressed interest on this musical adaptation including Paramount President Elizabeth Raposo, who stated, “We’re thrilled to be bringing this iconic property back to the big screen in musical form with our incredible filmmaking team.” However outside of producers from both the Broadway show and original film, along with lyricist and composer Jeff Richmond, no word has been announced on who will serve as director.
There’s certainly a ton of excitement to be had for Paramount getting another film version of one of their biggest hits. The film has continued to connect with audiences long after its 2004 release and Lorne Michaels, producer of the Broadway show, expressed that “It has been a joy to work on ‘Mean Girls’ and to watch it go from film, to musical, and now to musical film.” While recent musicals have been on a spotty track record (i.e. Cats) Paramount is still hoping for a hit on their hands and Mean Girls could be that fetch musical.
