Beyond Fest, a Los Angeles-based genre film festival, recently released their 2017 programming, and it boasts noteworthy guests, premieres, and revival screenings.
2017 marks the 40th anniversary of Suspiria, Dario Argento’s kaleidoscopic vision of terror. Beyond Fest will screen two versions of the film: a 4K restoration and a 35mm Italian cut. Argento is scheduled to appear at both screenings. Back in March, Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria wrapped production. The remake features Dakota Johnson in the lead role made famous by Jessica Harper. Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Tilda Swinton co-star.
Edgar Wright will appear alongside director Walter Hill to discuss Wright’s Baby Driver and Hill’s seminal crime thriller The Driver. In a rare appearance, Arnold Schwarzenegger will introduce two of his sci-fi classics, celebrating their 30th anniversary: The Running Man and Predator. Shane Black’s continuation of the franchise, The Predator, is currently set for an August 2018 release.
Besides revival screenings, Beyond Fest is hosting several premieres, including the world premiere of Justin MacGregor’s Best F(r)iends, which reunites cult film icons Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero of The Room (maybe the best worst movie ever made?). The Disaster Artist, James Franco’s movie about the making of The Room, is currently scheduled for a December release from A24.
Brawl in Cell Block 99, the latest movie from writer-director S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk), opens the festival while making its West Coast debut. Zahler will appear in-person to discuss the film with actors Vince Vaughn and Udo Kier. Finally, the festival will close with the West Coast premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer. It stars Nicole Kidman, Alicia Silverstone, and Colin Farrell.
Beyond Fest runs from September 29 to October 10 at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre.
