Talented actor Benicio del Toro (Che, The Last Jedi) is taking on his newest role yet: Cannes’ latest jury president, under the distinct competition subsection of Un Certain Regard, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The festival released this announcement on Wednesday.
Del Toro is decorated with award from his acting, such as his successful bid for best supporting actor Oscar seventeen years ago, earning it due to his performance in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic. It seems like he and Soderbergh have a very fruitful relationship, as the director’s film Che also garnered a Cannes award for del Toro as well. It must be nice for the actor to get such a rewarding opportunity from a festival that so clearly supports his career. This will not be his first time in such a role, as he also was on a Cannes jury several years ago, making this a triumphant return.
Un Certain Regard is somewhat of a competition within the main Cannes competition, and it will mark a decision between twenty interesting and creative new works.
The festival kicks into gear beginning May 8th and finishes up on May 19th.
