For many years, a sequel to the 1988 hit spectral comedy Beetlejuice has been rumored to be in the works. When director Tim Burton teased the follow-up during a press tour last year, he even seemed to confirm that Winona Ryder would reprise her role from the original. Now, Ryder herself has all but confirmed that the sequel is a go.
On a visit to Late Night with Seth Myers on Monday, the host pressed Ryder on the possibility of Beetlejuice 2. The actress’ response referenced Burton’s off-the-cuff press junket answer to a similar question:
Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton did this interview — like, it was very hush hush, top secret … and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it’…If he said it, I can say it.
Past reports have both Burton (the upcoming Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children) and star Michael Keaton (the upcoming McDonald’s biopic The Founder) eager to get back on board for sequel. In an interview with MTV last February, Keaton – who is in a career resurgence with his Oscar nominated star turn in this year’s Best Picture winner Birdman – said of moving forward with another installment:
I always said that’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another.
All we’ve got to go on right now are rumors and leaks, but it does look likely that we’ll be seeing more of ‘the ghost with the most.’ Watch for more info as it arises. Meanwhile, check out Ryder’s appearance on Late Night below:
