Following the massive success of this years’ Backrooms, grossing $393 million worldwide against a $10 million budget, movement is underway on a sequel. In a report from Dread Central, Kane Parsons will return to direct for A24, his first entry being the most profitable film in A24’s history. At just 21 years old, Backrooms was Parsons’ directorial debut, building the film based on the series he created on YouTube, utilizing lore from 4chan. It is not yet officially confirmed if the follow-up will be Parsons next film, with it previously being reported that he will team up with Osgood Perkins for a film that is currently in development. Perkins acted as a mentor to the young director, assisting him with the Backrooms script and acting as a producer on the film.
Backrooms came together when executive producer Chris White was shown Parsons’ The Backrooms (Found Footage) YouTube video by his son, the video itself currently sitting at 94 million views. White and Parsons brought the project to James Wan and Michael Clear at Atomic Monster, resulting in A24 eventually acquiring the rights. Wan and Clear also earned a producer credit. Parsons has said multiple times that the first film only scratched the surface of the story he wanted to tell, hinting that he will bring the same series ideology to the silver screen that he originally crafted in his YouTube series.
