Awards Season: Emmys Delays And European Film Awards Craze

With award season approaching, many films and performers have received recognition for many nominations, from Best Picture to Best Actor. Still, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and the prior WGA strike have affected the awards shows and their premiere dates.

The 2023 Emmys are currently set for 2024, with the voting ending next Monday night. Slated for a September release, the primetime ceremony was moved to next January to pick up after the SAG-AFTRA strike’s potential end. Additionally, the daytime ceremony’s premiere date is currently up in the air after being removed from its mid-June release. No other changes have been made for other noteworthy award ceremonies, but there is a strong chance that the strike can affect their schedule.

For instance, the 2023 European Film Awards are still on track to premiere in December with some noteworthy nominees, especially Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest. Zone is not only an official UK entry for the 2024 Oscars, but it has also received five nominations for the EFA, including best picture, best director, best screenwriter for Glazer, best actor for Christian Friedel, and best actress for Sandra Hüller. This impressive sweep competes with films like Io Capitano and Green Border. Even Hüller competes with herself over her two best actress nominations in Zone and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall.

Every film for this year’s EFA has been carefully selected by a board of directors focused on “the excellent quality of each film” and “the diversity and inclusion standards of the European Film Academy.” Though the strikes have been centered in America, the EFA has not made an official statement regarding how the strikes and this year’s festival will interact.
