‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ And ‘Elvis’ Among The Films Honored At The AIS’ Lumiere Awards

The 13^th annual Lumiere Awards ceremony happened yesterday, February 10, at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Avatar: The Way of Water and Elvis were some of the films that were honored. The awards are given by the Advanced Imaging Society and presented by Microsoft, it includes 23 categories and specialize in recognizing the use of technology in filmmaking.

Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, won the Best Live-Action Feature Film award. Jon Landau, the producer, received the award among the visual effects supervisors Eric Saindon and Richie Baneham. The director also was honored with a different award named Voices for the Earth.  Avatar was described by AIS as the: “most awe-inspiring and astonishing cinematic experience of the year.”

Elvis’ director Baz Luhrman received recognition for Best Musical Motion Picture and Best Musical Scene in the ceremony. Luhrman was also honored with the Harold Lloyd Award.  Austin Butler, who plays Elvis in the biopic, was present at that moment, and the award was presented with the following words:

 “Baz Luhrmann’s films have entertained millions around the world, but their innovative style also illuminates something much deeper about the zeitgeist of the world at a particular moment…Mr. Luhrmann’s incredible artistry and work on Elvis represents a bold new forefront for technical, emotional, and memorable cinematic achievement. We are thrilled to honor him with this award.”

Damien Chazelle was also awarded a special distinction named Gene Kelly Visionary Award. Other winners of the night were Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio as Best Animated feature and Good Night Oppy as Best Documentary.

 Best 2D to 3D Conversion: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Marvel Studios/ Disney)

 Best Musical Scene or Sequence: “Elvis” (Warner Bros)

 Best Scene or Sequence in a Feature Film: “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount)

 Best Episodic – Animated: “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi” (Lucasfilm/Disney)

 Best Episodic – Live Action: “Andor” (Lucasfilm/Disney)

 Best Achievement in 8K Production: Kansai TV

 Sir Charles Wheatstone Award for Creative Excellence in Visual Effects: Wētā FX

 Innovation in Technology Award: Microsoft

 Innovation in Post-Production Tools: Adobe

 Distinguished Achievement in Education: “Camera Assessment Series” (HBO Max)
