Fans of popular Disney franchises might have to wait even longer to get more movies after the studio released a new timeline yesterday. All three Avatar films, two untitled Star Wars films, and several Marvel movies were just some of the movies whose premiere dates were rescheduled.
Avatar 3, which was supposed to come out in December 2024, has now been pushed to December 2025. Avatar 4 will now be released in December 2029, and Avatar 5 will finally be out in 2031.
When many fans took to social media to criticize the studio’s decision to push back so many movies, Avatar producer Jon Landau tried to explain the production team’s decision on his own Twitter.
One Star Wars movie was pushed from December 2025 to May 2026, and one was added to December 2026; another is already scheduled for December 2027. Daisy Ridley is rumored to return to the Star Wars universe to reprise Rey for the first time since 2019.
The MCU also got a major restructure in Disney’s new plans– Avengers: Kang Dynasty is being pushed back an entire year, from May 2025 to May 2026. Captain America: Brave New World, on the other hand, will only be delayed 2 months and open in July 2024 instead of May 2024. The Marvels will release on schedule in November 2023.
While Disney has not given an official reason for the delays, a move like this coming on the heels of the writers’ strike is not an anomaly. Disney is no stranger to rescheduling the release dates of movies or canceling them altogether, and many studios have been doing the same.
While many fans are upset at the delays, many also know that the delays will improve the quality of the movies. There are both pros and cons of rescheduling, and it’s up to the fan to decide which is more important.
