‘Avatar’ Sequel Set To Pass Over $150M At Box Office

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is on its way to making a killing this holiday season. The sequel, releasing December 16, is looking to pull in at least $150 million, with some estimates tracking the debut at $170 million to $200 million. The original film was released in 2009, making $77 million initially. Like the first film, the sequel will see a steady revenue stream from staying in theaters for a prolonged period after its initial release.

Studios are cautious about releasing any new films alongside The Way of Water. As a result, Warner Bros. decided to move Shazam! Fury of the Gods to March 2023 from its original winter date to give the film breathing room. The original Avatar, however, did have company when it was released, sharing the spotlight with Sherlock HolmesIt’s Complicated, and Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel

While studios are shy about The Way of Water’s release, audiences can’t wait to see what new wonders await them on Pandora. The film holds a high level of “unaided awareness” which measures how many people want to see the movie without being prompted.
