James Cameron’s 2009 science fiction epic movie, Avatar, has once again regained its title as the highest grossing movie in the world. With theaters slowly reopening around the world, one way that they have been getting people once again into theater seats is by re-releasing popular or classic films. This was the case for Avatar, which received a relaunch in China theaters this weekend and brought in $8 million in ticket sales on Saturday alone.
Deadline reports that this rerelease has brought Avatar’s box office total to $2.802 billion or $2,798,579,794. Avatar was the highest grossing movie for several years until it was dethroned and surpassed by the Marvel movie Avengers: Endgame in July of 2019. However now Avatar has surpassed Avengers: Endgame which has totaled $2,797.8 or $2,797,501,328. This is a big win for Disney since the company now owns both Marvel and the Avatar franchise. Marvel Studios congratulated the Avatar team on Twitter this morning, posting “We love you 3000.”

As of right now director James Cameron is still working on sequels to Avatar. Images from Avatar 2 have been released and information about the sequel’s setting have been revealed. Cameron has been promising sequels to Avatar for years and Avatar 2 is promised to come out on December 16th, 2022. Perhaps Avatar 2 will be able it break the original’s record.
