The highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar will officially resume production in New Zeland next week.
Avatar 2 producer Jon Landau posted a photo of the sets in New Zealand to Instagram, captioning his photo “Our #Avatar sets are ready — and we couldn’t be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week. Check out the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel (bottom) and the Picador jetboat (top) — can’t wait to share more.”
Work on the sequel stopped in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic over concerns of the cast and crew’s safety. The New Zeland government instituted an early on lockdown to prevent the spread, causing all nonessential businesses to shut down.
Avatar 2 has been a long time in the making, and it’s been 11 years since the release of the original film. Production was hoping to be done shooting by the end of 2020, but the novel coronavirus threw off their timeline. The film currently has a tentative release date on Dec. 17, 2021, but there has been no word whether or not this will change.
Additionally, the franchise has plans for three more films, though their plots are still unknown. The sequels are set to come out in 2023, 2025 and 2027 respectively.
