For those eager to feed their eye candy by viewing the alien inhabited moon Pandora on the big screen, you will have to hold tight a little longer. James Cameron’s Avatar 2, the follow up to his 2009 global sci-fi smash hit Avatar has experienced yet another setback. Twentieth Century Fox planned for the film to release during Christmas of this year, then pushed it back to 2017, and now delays have halted it the production once again.
Fox declined to comment as to what specifically is the issue with completing the much anticipated film and the two sequels set to follow. CEO Jim Gianopulos was able to meet with Cameron last summer at his offices in New Zealand believing a 2017 release was highly possible. Gianopulos also stated, “James Cameron has his own pace.” The Oscar winning director has a reputation of being a bit of a perfectionist when crafting his work. For instance it took five years for the original film to be completed with over two years of post production.
In 2014, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana signed on to reprise their roles as the lead characters Jake Sully and Neytiri. Cameron had intended on shooting all three sequels at once in New Zealand but no start date has been set.
The story line continues where the last movie left off on the indigenous planet. Cameron has noted that there is an underwater element to what he wants to showcase on screen, a possible reason for the latest delay.
Another roadblock that arose recently for the production was the announcement that Disney would move Star Wars: Episode VIII to Christmas of 2017. The Force Awakens is still running strong in the worldwide box office at $1.9 billion, steadily chasing Cameron’s records of $2.2 billion with Titanic and $2.8 billion atop the list with Avatar.
