According to Deadline, Ava DuVernay’s production company, Array, has acquired the romance indie, Echo Park.
The directorial debut by photographer Amanda Marsalis follows a romance between characters of opposite ends in the increasingly gentrified L.A. neighborhood which the film is named after. The film stars Mamie Gummer (Ricki and the Flash) and Anthony Okungbowa (Division 19) as the lead characters.
The news comes relatively long after it premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival. Array executive director Tilane Jones said the film has many of the qualities the company appreciates.
We’re excited to introduce Amanda Marsalis and her gem Echo Park produced by Anthony Okungbowa to audiences hungry for the work of bold, women directors and filmmakers of color.
Duvernay founded Array in 2010. This is only their third project that includes the upcoming thrillers Suppression and Alice. No release date has been announced for Echo Park; in addition to premiering at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival, it also screened at the 2015 Ashland Independent Film Festival.
We’ll have more on Echo Park as it develops.
