Aubrey Plaza to Host This Year’s Independent Spirit Awards

Aubrey Plaza is among the newly added actors in 'Mortdecai,' which has shifted production from London to L.A.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards has leg up on the Oscars this year as they have something that the Oscars doesn’t – a host. Aubrey Plaza will be hosting the Spirit Awards which will make the show very interesting with her offbeat, deadpan sense of humor, made popular through her role as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation. At last year’s show, Plaza took home the Best First Picture award for Ingrid Goes West, which she starred in and co-produced. So now that she has experience with independent film, she will be hosting the awards ceremony that celebrates it.

Past hosts include Kate McKinnon, Kumail Nanjiani, Fred Armisen, John Mulaney, and Kristen Bell. Plaza will be joining this all-star league to participate in the ceremony which is Film Independent’s big fundraiser. The Film Independent organization helps support emerging filmmakers and gets previously unheard voices onto the big screen.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards airs on IFC on Saturday, February 23. That Saturday is the day before the Oscars ceremony so it will be a busy weekend for filmmakers and film fanatics as we look to see who will be receiving recognition for their work in 2018.
