Assassin’s Creed Gets Ready to Make a Box-Office Killing

As we previously reported, he immensely popular and critically acclaimed video game franchise Assassin’s Creed will soon be receiving the feature film treatment, and now we know when. French video game publisher Ubisoft announced that it will release the movie in cooperation with Fox studios on May 22, 2015.

Michael Fassbender, the rising star of such pictures as X-Men: First Class, Prometheus and Inglourious Basterds, has taken the Assassin’s Creed game series under his talented wing. He’s not only acting as executive producer, but he has also hired writer Michael Lesslie to pen the script. Fassbender will play Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad – the main character (and yes, an assassin) of the first title.

Video Game movies have generally been mediocre at best. Even the slightly successful (and similar) ones such as 2001’s Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie, have been panned by the critics, and most of them (too numerous to name in this article alone) have been down right box office flops. Assassin’s Creed has the distinction of being a video game lucky enough to resemble more of a Hollywood archetype, with the plot centering around a handsome mysterious hired killer who fights for what he believes is a righteous cause. Fox is banking on the fact that movie fans and fanboy gamers will be enthralled enough with the potential action/adventure to turn Assassin’s Creed silver screen time into box office gold.
