Focus Features released the trailer for Armageddon Time, a story about a multi-generational family living in 1980 America, written and directed by James Gray (Ad Astra, The Lost City of Z). Ronald Reagan has just won the Presidential election and the family’s young son, played by Banks Repeta, has hopes of becoming an artist. He has even made a new friend, life is good.
However, there is one problem, his friend (Jaylin Webb), is black. Though it is never explicitly said, Repeta’s character’s mother, played by Anne Hathaway, tells him he cannot see his friend anymore because “I think you know what I mean.” He is subsequently sent away to a prestigious boarding school where he encounters insidious racism when the other boys meet his friend.
The film also stars Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) as Maryanne Trump, Jeremy Strong (Succession) as Repeta’s father, and Anthony Hopkins as the boy’s grandfather.
The climax of the trailer surrounds Anthony Hopkins’ grandfather character chastising the protagonist when he does not defend his friend. Hopkins’ character escaped hate for the American Dream but hate still lives.
The movie’s synopsis is “A deeply personal story on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship and the generational pursuit of the American Dream.”
Armageddon Time‘s cast also includes Teddy Coluca, Richard Bekins, and Marcia Haufrecht.
