Think back to when you were a child, sitting at the breakfast table on Sunday morning, reading the Sunday comics. How many of you remember little Archie Andrews and his friends roaming around Riverdale, chasing after girls? Well, Archie’s back and headed for the big screen, and now there may be zombies running around town.
If you think you heard wrong, you didn’t. Recently, Warner Bros. Pictures finished some significant talks to create a live-action Archie Comics film, according to Deadline. Signed on to direct is Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) while Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee) will write the script. Aguirre-Sacasa, known for his touch-ups on the Broadway hit Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, plans to revamp the kid-friendly Archie comics, adding an afterlife twist with the name “Afterlife with Archie.”
When Aguirre-Sacasa and John L. Goldwater, creator of the hit comic series, sat down together and discussed turning Archie into a movie star, Aguirre-Sacasa recalls asking questions like, “What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead? Could we pull that off, tonally?”
Since the Archie storyline has been pulled so many different ways in the past- in one story line, Archie gets married to Betty, in another the bride is Veronica – it’s no surprise that Goldwater is so willing to try out Archie Undead. It’ll be exciting to see how this movie turns out given Moore and Aguirre-Sacasa’s backgrounds. If this movie gets to the screen without a musical number, I think we’ll all be stunned.
