A highly anticipated film from directors Anthony and Joe Russo’s Cherry will debut under Apple Original Films starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo. The film is planned for debut in early 2021 on Apple TV Plus.
The film is based on Nico Walker’s semi-autobiographical New York Times bestselling novel, which centers on a former Army medic (Holland) who returns home from war with undiagnosed PTSD, develops a heroin addiction, and begins robbing banks to fund that addiction. Walker was caught and convicted for robbery in 2011, he was sentenced for 11 years, and he wrote the book while in prison. He is expected to be released in Nov. 2020.
Variety exclusively announced in March 2019 that the Russo brothers would re-team with the film’s Marvel star. The cast includes Kelli Burglund, Jack Reynor, Forrest Goodluck, Jeff Wahlberg, Michael Gandolfini, Kyle Harvey, and Thomas Lennon. Jessica Goldberg and Angela Russo-Otstot will co-write the film.
Cherry will be the first film that the Russo brothers will direct after wrapping up their four-film run at Marvel with Avenger: Endgame. Cherry is the latest addition of high-profile releases for the streaming service, including Sofie Coppola’s One the Rocks starring Rashida Jones and Bill Murray. The Sky is Everywhere, starring Cherry Jones and Jason Segel, and Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro, is also highly anticipated.
