Fault in Our Stars star Ansel Elgort is in early talks to be a lead in Dungeons & Dragons for Warner Bros. The film will be based on the phenomenally successful fantasy role-playing game which originated in 1974. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is on board to direct from a script by David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans).
The project was stuck for a time in a legal quagmire between Hasbro – the game’s current publisher – and Sweetpea Entertainment, which had optioned the film rights in the 1990s and later sold the rights to Warner Bros. A settlement was finally reached last August, hence allowing Warner Bros. to move forward.
Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis will co-produce, alongside Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman of Sweetpea Entertainment, as well as Roy Lee.
Elgort was a star-crossed lover in the cancer drama The Fault In Our Stars opposite Shailene Woodley, and played Woodley’s brother in the Divergent franchise. He has wrapped up filming on Billionaire Boys Club, a 1980s biography drama with fellow young rising star Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service). He will next play the titular role in Edgar Wright’s action heist film Baby Driver which is set to bow on March 17, 2017.
