Film festival season is well underway, with the Los Angeles Film Festival entering its second week. The Annecy International Animated Film Festival has officially ended, and a variety of wonderful animated films and shorts were displayed for the public. According to the Annecy website, over 230 different films were selected and shown, with over 500 showings throughout the week of the festival.
A slew of unique animated films won top honors, with the top Cristal for best animated feature went to Masaaki Yuasa’s Lu Over the Wall, a colorful Japanese animated musical about a boy who meets a mermaid in his town. This is Yuasa’s first animated feature from an original story, with most of his previous works being animated shows like Ping Pong.
The Jury Award was won by In this Corner of the World, a Japanese war drama which focuses on a young woman living in Hiroshima who must cope with the war around her and maintain her happiness and will to live through the hardships. The Audience Award went to Loving Vincent, a Polish-English film that focuses on Vincent Van Gogh’s life, where every single frame in the film was hand-painted in Van Gogh. The work was seen all across social media because of the significant amount of work that was needed for the film.
Other Award winners include Min Börda (The Burden) with the Cristal for Best Short Film, Kötü Kiz (Wicked Girl) with the Jury Award for a short film, and Pépé le morse (Grandpa Walrus) with the Audience Award for a short film. The Annecy Festival continues to grow every year, and we are very excited to see what the next festival will provide for us in 2018.
