Amy Winehouse Biopic ‘Back to Black’ Releases First Trailer

Her Music. Her Life. Her Terms.

The tagline for Focus Features’ Back to Black, a biopic about the late great artist Amy Winehouse, lays out the film’s intentions. Up-and-coming British actress Marisa Abela, known for Industry, stars as Winehouse in the Sam Taylor-Johnson directed film.

The newly released trailer for Back to Black offers a glimpse into how the film depicts Winehouse’s early life and meteoric rise to stardom. From her early experiments with music in her bedroom to meeting Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell), her future ex-husband, and her tumultuous relationships with her father Mitch (Eddie Marsan), mother Janis (Juliet Cowan), and grandmother Cynthia (Lesley Manville).

The trailer is scored by two of multi-time Grammy award winner Winehouse’s most famous songs, “Rehab” and “Back to Black,” the namesake for both her breakthrough album and the film itself. The Hollywood Reporter describes how the filmmakers were given complete access to Winehouse’s extensive musical catalog through their partnership with both the Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing. The Amy Winehouse Estate was also involved with producing the project.

Winehouse battled invasive media attention throughout her short time in the public eye. She struggled with addiction throughout her life and succumbed to an accidental alcohol overdose on July 23, 2011.

Back to Black is set to release on May 17, 2024. Watch the debut trailer below.
