On Monday industry sources told Variety that Amazon is in talks to acquire the entirety of MGM’s catalogue for reported $9 billion. The rumors have been circulating for weeks now, but following Discorvery’s $43 billion deal to acquire Warner Media, they have intensified. Leading a speculative report to be released on Monday from The Information
According to Deadline, serious talks have been occurring for the past week. However, both MGM and Amazon have not commented on the reports.
Ever since the pandemic has delayed the release of No Time to Die, Daniel Craig’s final venture as James Bond, MGM has been one of the most high profile targets for takeover, according to Collider.
MGM has an incredibly large library that includes 12 Best Picture winners, large franchises such as the Rocky and James Bond films, as well as several acclaimed television series like The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo. MGM claims to have one of the world’s “deepest libraries” of film and television content, all of which would be owned by Amazon if the deal comes to fruition.
Being around since 1924, MGM is currently run by Micheal De Luca. The studio has a large slate of upcoming films such as House of Gucci, Creed 3, from director Micheal B. Jordan, as well as new films from Paul Thomas Anderson and Ron Howard.
