Amazon MGM Drops Luca Guadagnino’s Sam Altman Drama ‘Artificial’

Amazon MGM Studios has announced that it has dropped the Sam Altman-centered drama Artificial, directed by Luca Guadagnino. The studio will no longer be releasing the film and is currently shopping it to other studios.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. It is described as a true-story drama in the vein of The Social Network, recounting the period in 2023 when Altman was fired and then rehired as CEO of OpenAI. Other members of the cast include Yuri Borisov, the Oscar-nominated Anora actor, playing OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever; Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati; and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.

In a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said the following:

“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue. We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”

The announcement of the film’s cancellation comes only a few months after Amazon’s announcement that it is investing over $50 billion in OpenAI, in a collaboration described as a “multi-year strategic partnership” aimed at improving Amazon Web Services.
